Typescript carbon for the novel Bride of the MacHugh (pub. Bobbs-Merrill, 1954). The novel is set in early 17th-century Scotland and, as with other of her works, reflects her interest in the Scottish highlanders from whom her own family was descended.

Jan Cox Speas (1925-1971), short story writer, novelist, and teacher, was born in Raleigh, N.C. and graduated from the Woman's College (UNCG) in 1945 where she studied creative writing with Hiram Haydn. After receiving her M.A. in English (UNCG) in 1964, she began teaching at Guilford College, Greensboro, N.C. She was well known for her historical romances during the 1950's and 1960's. Following her death from a heart attack, Avon Publications brought out paperback editions of her romances. By 1...
